Our approach to reading

At St John’s School we aim for all our pupils to become competent, independent readers and also to foster a life-long love of reading.

We do this through:

  • The teaching of Progression in Phonics and spellings according to the New National Curriculum
  • Daily Reading Skills sessions throughout the school. These sessions provide a rich and varied reading experience for all pupils, from initial skills of decoding to higher order skills of inference and deduction.
  • Good quality reading books for both Key Stages including colour coded sets to ensure progression.
  • The ‘Give Me 5’ Home Reading Challenge which encourages children to aim for 5 entries in their Reading Journal every week. In Reception, parents are encouraged to read daily with their children. As the children move through the school, the ratio of adult reading sessions to independent sessions changes to reflect their maturity.
  •  Reading Swap sessions where children of Key Stage 2 are paired with children of

Key Stage 1. Both age groups benefit greatly from this positive experience.

  • Author visits and Book Weeks where children enjoy a variety of book related fun and even become authors themselves.
  • Book Fairs which provide an opportunity for children to purchase books whilst raising money for class libraries.
  • Reading Areas which are well resourced and inviting.
