Puffin Class Newsletter – Term 5
Dear Parents,
Welcome back after the Easter break. This is going to be another busy term with KS 1 Spring Sing-a-long in All Saints Church on Wednesday, 24thApril being the highlight.
Mrs Dalton’s Phonics group will continue working on their programme for 6 more weeks. There has been some excellent progress made, in particular by children who complete their homework every week. Please keep up the good work.
I have been very proud of the children for producing some spectacular work on dragons during Book Week. Their illustrations in the style of Eric Carle have been admired by everybody. Thank you to those who have sent in books by Eric Carle and also to Mr Middlewood, Mr Barnes, Mr Russell and Mr Gay for coming in to read a story to the children. Not forgetting Mrs Sellwood, who kindly lent us a puppet theatre to help us act out ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’.
What will we be doing in Term 5?
InLiteracywe will read and compare different versions of ‘The Ugly Duckling’. Children will also learn how to write a playscript. Our main focus this term will be on non-fiction texts. We will research and write a report on pets. In the last week of the term we will perform and write our own poems about animals.
In preparation for the Phonics Screening Check, we will be working very hard on sounding out longer words (2 and 3 syllables) and made-up words as these are the ones the children find most difficult. At school the children enjoy playing ‘Picnic on Pluto’ and ‘Dragon’s Den’ onwww.phonicsplay.co.uk. If you would like to play these games at home, please select Phase 5 and Phase 3 – vowel digraphs.
Most children know all the sounds they have learnt in Year R and Year 1 which is excellent. We will assess the children again to find out if there are still any gaps in their knowledge and then they will bring home another set of cards with the sounds they don’t know. Please use these at home regularly.
Also, we will no longer use your child’s Sound Book and Word Book at school, so the children will not need to bring them in.
InNumeracywe will be working on counting on in tens from single digit numbers and back, ordering numbers to 100, adding and subtracting 10 and 11, telling the time to the hour (o’clock) and half past the hour, coin recognition and finding totals up to 20p and using number facts to add single-digit numbers to two-digit numbers.
InSciencewe will continue learning about plants. This term’s focus will be on sorting and comparing seeds. We will plant a range of seeds, including some less common ones.
InREwe will talk about who the children admire, and why some people were made saints. We will learn about St George, St David, St Andrew and St Patrick.
InArtwe will make animal sculptures using junk materials. I would be grateful if you could send in lots of old newspaper, yoghurt pots, kitchen towel rolls and plastic milk containers. Thank you in advance.
Weather permitting, we will doPEoutside. Please send in a pair of trainers and a tracksuit.
Many thanks for your continued support.
Kind regards,
Mrs O’Hagan
