Welcome to Term 5!
This term we will be very busy as, as usual, there are many things to pack into a very few weeks.
We would like to remind you of a few day to day things, which though quite minor are important for the children.
Please make sure your child has the following:
· A water bottle – to be taken home to wash and replenish daily
· A sun hat/cap – if the sun ever shines!
· 3 sharpened pencils – to be sharpened every evening please – do not allow your child to bring in a pencil sharpener – the mess they can make with pencil shavings has to be seen to be believed!
· Trainers/plimsolls that fit – due to the recent freezing cold weather we haven’t been able to go outside for games but hopefully the weather will be better from now on – your child’s feet may have grown since last wearing their trainers.
· If it is likely to be very sunny, please apply sun cream to exposed places before school. This will give some protection throughout the day.
Now to the important stuff – what we will be doing in the classroom over the next few weeks:
In Literacy we have started off by studying poetry. We will be reading poems for enjoyment and looking at how they are structured. How does the author establish rhythm and rhyme? The children will have the opportunity to share favourite poems with the class and try writing poems of their own. We continue to work on punctuation - very important when work is assessed – including basics such as capital letters and full stops, speech punctuation, exclamation marks, question marks and use of interesting connectives and sentence openers.
To support the learning we will be grateful if you will look at punctuation and how it is used for clarity and effect when you are doing your reading with your child.
In Maths we will be cementing place value, addition and subtraction of 1, 2 and, for some, 3 digit numbers. Doubling & halving, adding near multiples of 10 ie 9, 19. More work on time including time intervals, 3D shapes and data handling.
Please keep practising times tables, telling the time and working out change.
In Science we are starting the term thinking about plants – their life cycles, structure and how they grow.
In History we will shortly be starting our work on Ancient Greece and this will be supported by books studied during Guided Reading and our work in Literacy.
So, we have plenty to do and we hope that we can rely on you to help to support your child with all aspects of learning.
